Digital Literacy
We live in a technological world.
If you think about it for a moment, your Old Mate has seen a massive shift in the reliance on technology in their lifetime. When they grew up humans hadn't yet landed on the moon, the internet was but a dream, and even ballpoint pens weren't widely used.
So, it's understandable that not all Old Mates are as proficient with computers, smart phones, or tablets as you might be.
Technology, however, can be a useful (and even vital) link to the outside world, especially for Old Mates with mobility or social challenges.
Therefore, taking some time to teach your Old Mate the basics of the internet, email, video chat, etc. can have a huge impact on their quality of life.
Important
· Cyber scams are on the increase, with the elderly a higher risk of falling prey. Any digital education should also include the fundamentals of being safe online.
Inspiration
· Most cities, towns and communities have some sort of formal (and usually free) digital literacy program for the elderly. Google will be your friend in finding something near to you.
